2016 Price List

Sadly, the Trout Wine Shop closed for the last time in January 2014 and the space is now a popular self-catering holiday let, called Little Trout (www.littletrout.co.uk).  However, although the shop has gone, the website lives on and I aim to continue offering an interesting and personal selection of wines for sale.  Since browsing my shelves is no longer an option, it is now possible to browse "virtually" with the addition of photographs.  I have tried to keep all the images roughly the same size but, as they come from different sources, this has not always been possible.

Wine orders can still be collected from The Trout but, as my stock is no longer stored on site, advance warning of a visit is advisable, preferrably by email.  Glass hire will still be available for parties, again by prior arrangement.

When screw top wines first started appearing, I used to distinguish them in my lists with a symbol.  However, since the vast majority of the wines I sell now come with a screw top, it seems sensible to identify those which have a cork, rather than those which don't.  I have chosen a corkscrew symbol for this purpose, which seems logical!  Some bottles marked with a corkscrew may appear to have screw tops in the picture because these are more recent bottlings.  The corkscrew symbol doesn't necessarily mean that you'll need one to get into the bottle, just that it hasn't got a screw top!  Most sparkling wines can be opened by hand, so have no symbol.

We are delighted to quote prices for delivery to any part of the UK mainland which, wherever possible, will be on our own vehicles but we cannot guarantee either speed or cheapness!  Please do ask - you may be surprised.  See below for details.

Wine continues to be what this list is all about - wine that has been selected because it is interesting, enjoyable and which, while offering good value for money, is not included because it fits an arbitrarily set 'price point'.  Nearly three quarters of the wines in this list fall between £6 and £12 per bottle because this is where, I believe, the best value is to be found.  These are wines that I am passionate about - I hope you will share that passion.

Please note:  the discounted prices in the main list apply to mixed and unmixed cases.  And if, heaven forbid, you decide that you do not like a wine you have bought from me, I will happily exchange unopened bottles.

Such is my enthusiasm for the wines of South Africa that I list them first.  Why the enthusiam? It is because, for me, these wines combine the best of the "old" world and the best of the "new" in wine making terms. Many grape varieties seem to grow better in South Africa than they do anywhere else - Chenin Blanc being a prime example.  Another would be the wonderful Mourvèdre which you can find as a single varietal wine in the south of France and, as Monastrell, in Spain but somehow it gains another dimension in Swartland (and not just there).  The selection here includes some truly great wines and I have seldom, if ever, encountered a bad bottle.  Please give them a go

South Africa White

False Bay Wild Yeast Chenin Blanc 2014  Western Cape
7.75
6.95
Possibly my favourite Chenin Blanc.   Consistently good - rich and apricoty

False Bay Chardonnay 2013

Western Cape

7.75
6.95
Although unoaked this is made from sun ripened fruit, giving it much greater depth and flavour
Curator's Choice White Blend 2014  Swartland
9.65
8.70
An intriguing blend of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillon made by Adi Badenhorst, one of South Africa's most innovative and charismatic wine makers.  This isn't the actual label available and what I have is clearly going to be a collectors' item so hurry while stocks last!

Signal Cannon Chenin Blanc 2013

Voor-Pardeberg, Paarl

9.75
8.80
Drier and more austere than the False Bay with hints of Granny Smith (apples, one assumes)
Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2012  Stellenbosch
9.90
8.90
Described as 'Special Late Harvest' on the back label, this isn't quite a pudding wine but is full of luscious spicy Gewürz fruit.  A bit of a treat

Vondeling Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Coastal Region

11.50
10.35
Another great wine.  Clean crisp and fresh.  Limited availability of this vintage

The Tea Leaf Chenin Blanc 2013  Piekernierskloof
12.99 11.70
I've never tasted a Chenin Blanc quite like this!  The name derives from the rooibos tea plants that grow close beside the vines and impart their own flavour to the wine.  A perfect cuppa?

Vondeling Chardonnay 2013

Voor-Paardeberg, Paarl

12.99
11.80
Proving increasingly popular with those who like subtly oaked old world style Chardonnay.  Limited availability

Vondeling Chardonnay 2014

Voor-Paardeberg, Paarl

6.75
More Bordeaux than Rhone - a very drinkable combination
Darling Cellars "The Chairman" 2012  Darling

New Zorgvliet Silvermyn Argentum 2013  Banghoek
7.99
7.30
Terrific 'Bordeaux' blend using all the classic grapes. I'd sooner drink this than any claret at the price
Darling Cellars Chocoholic Pinotage 2013  Darling

  Spice Route Pinotage 2009  Swartland
11.20
9.99
Special occasion wine, perhaps, but what a wine!  Packed with glorious flavours of chocolate and coffee.  Totally different to any other Pinotage - world class!

Vondeling Baldrick Shiraz 2012

Voor-Paardeberg, Paarl

11.35 10.20
Don't be put off by the jokey name - this is a serious wine (or should that be 'cunning'?)
  Spice Route Grenache 2012  Swartland
11.70
10.55
Was a short term replacement for the Mourvèdre which is now back in stock (see below).  It is really juicy and plummy - great fun!
  Spice Route Mourvèdre 2013  Swartland
12.20 10.90
Quite a leap vintage-wise, from 2009 to 2013 but another wonderful wine that will repay keeping a while
  Donkiesbaai Pinot Noir 2013  Witzenberg
23.80
21.40
OK, yes, it's expensive but this is serious wine, made from grapes grown in the highest Pinot Noir vineyards in South Africa.  It will rival the best from Burgundy, without question, given time
